In the Midnight Garden

They come alive you know

These are some of the stars from the festival des épouvantails (scarecrows) held anually in the village of Meyrals near Les Eyzies.

Head this way if you're feeling peckish.

Easy does it as you pass the metal spider. No sudden movement!

The Joker's on you.

There's an army of them and they're on the move.

How about a 'cup o' tea an' a slice o' cake' for Worzel Gummidge and Aunt Sally?

Everybody's happy, but beware, things may be different after dark!

  3. Those are great! It reminds me of our Main Street in the fall. People sure can get creative.

  4. A very fashion forward group. I foresee pink and yellow striped hats coming back into vogue any day now.

  5. They are funny, and if they can scare a deer, then they are priceless!

  6. I've always found Scarecrows a bit creepy but these are wonderful. We have Scarecrow trails round here too but I must admit to avoiding them. Great photos Rob.

  12. Oh what a delight! The fellow with the parasol bending in such a friendly examply of welcoming body english is superb. The ladies seem well endowed too. What a fun festival. We have Harvest Hannah here who gets to dress for fall and winter holidays. She hasn't been out the last couple of years. This might be the inspiration I need to give her a makeover. And Willy's is the stuff of dreams. That photo is the living end. :-)

Do try the blood grass along the wall. I have a similar poor soil situation on the 40 foot wall and the blood grass is the best performer growing there. Too bad it goes dormant in winter here.

  19. Popped back to take another, more leisurely look at your épouvantails. I notice the event was supported by what I presume is a local commune/tourist/regional promotion board, Bieu Périgord? My comment was don't the French do this civic pride thing well. I (like many others before I'm guessing) had the idea of photographing a book of the beautiful and creative roundabouts we have found (usually in what appears to be the middle of nowhere) while traveling the by-ways of France. Desert islands, whole mini fishing villages and some weirdly creative constructs celebrating some local rural industry or pursuit, all life is there, including once a wild flower corn meadow, old plough and a happy famile épouvantail.
