Abbaye de Cadouin

There are many plant and flower fairs held at this time of the year in this part of the Dordogne. As ever they're great social events and take place in simply beautiful towns and villages. The final Marché Aux Fleurs of the season is held around the impressive Abbey at Cadouin. The Romanesque church was consecrated in 1154 and exudes a twelfth-century Cistercian spirituality. The cloisters, built in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, provide a magnificent example of flamboyant Gothic architecture. The Abbey at Cadouin is registered on UNESCO’s World Inheritance list under the heading of Compostelle Paths in France. Karen and I arrived early that morning as we've a a 1001 things to do at this time of year (our first guests arrive this week) yet we didn't want to miss out on this one. A Glut of Cepes

This exceptionally warm and at times humid September has gifted mushroom lovers all over the Perigord with a harvest not seen for years. The restaurants in Sarlat seemed to be offering 'cepe' everything, such is the appreciation of this particular bolete in SouthWest France. This mornings visit to Sarlat market was in fact the first market outing Karen and I have ventured on all year - though 2021 has been an unusual year - has it not? The sun shone and it was warm, feeling more like August that late September. There's a chance of thunder later on. Of course there's more to life than mushrooms as this photo clearly demonstrates. The Merry Month of May

New shoots of the hardy banana Musa basjoo . Each year this grows into a 15 to 20 foot beast, depending on rainfall. It looks great against the stone back drop of the old cattle barn, never out of place and interestingly, not particularly tropical-esque, just great foliage. The first frosts of winter cut it down and that's where I leave it until the following spring, the blackened foliage self-mulching and protecting the crown until April when I clear it away and cut it back close to the ground. It's a ritual at this time of year to keep checking for new shoots wondering whether it's survived and voila!!! Lilly of the Valley or muguet de bois makes an appearance. Today is May day and in France it is the equivalent of Labour Day or Fête du Travail. The French have a charming tradition on May one of giving this little flower to friends and loved ones as a porte-bonheur, literally, a bringer of happiness and they are sold in little bunches on many street corners.
