Growing Colour

I like the packaging for these seeds, there's a minimal thing going on. It seems seed suppliers the world over are creating increasingly beautiful packages, veritable works of art in fact so it seems a shame to tear them open when really they should be framed.

This year I've bought seeds from Thompson and Morgan, Sarah Raven and Vilmorin. I've purchased Cosmos 'Tetra de Versailles and 'Purity', Amaranthus, Nasturtium 'Empress of India' various Nicotiana, Cleome, Cobaea (the cup and saucer plant) plus many, many more. Altogether too many as I treat over ordering as an unavoidable hazard.

This is my first order from Sarah Raven's Kitchen and Garden. Sarah Raven has been one of the key presenters on the BBC's Gardeners' World programme and runs a cookery and gardening school at Perch Hill farm in East Sussex, England. Furthermore, Sarah is a celebrated writer and penn'd my favourite gardening book, The Bold and Brilliant Garden which also features stunning photography by Jonathan Buckley.

So it's all systems go over the coming weeks as I start sowing under glass and playing the usual cat 'n' mouse game with the weather, covering the cold frames when frost is forecast, ventilating when the mercury shoots up, you all know the score!

Finally and just for good measure here's a photo of another impulse buy. Is there no cure?

These Lilies will look beautiful on the terrace growing in a terracotta pot.

  1. I really don't think there is a cure, especially this time of year! I buy some and then feel the need to get more. Those seed packages are nice and simple. I like them too.

  2. Lovely seedpackets! I might have to order just for the packets :)

And no, there is definitely no cure. Just a moments relief after buying between the excitement and the hunger for more. After all, the next purchase might be the best?

  3. I really sincerely made a pact with a friend that we would not be sucked into buying seeds this year (we both have lousy luck with seeds) but oh ! .. reading seed catalogs should also have been on the list of what we weren't going to do either .. oops ! LOL

  4. I have a feeling that we can never have too many flowers. Last year I had so many sunflower starters, but I managed to get them into pots and the ground by mid summer.

    Love Empress of India. sigh....

  5. Rob, before heading out on a 3 hour drive this morning, I took a few minutes to order seeds from Thompson & Morgan! They lured me in with a $10USD off for my first order with them. My defenses were gone... herbs, annuals and perennials.

I'm not sure what to do with 1,000 chive seeds! I think chives make a delicious edging to a garden bed. I love the flowers in omelets, too.

I hope my eyes aren't bigger than my garden! :-)

  7. Hi Rob, thanks for visiting my blog - I like your too as well as happily sharing your addiction to seed packets - how could anyone resist those lillies?!
I always claim I'm not going to overbuy/impulse buy seeds, but I'm hopeless!

  10. You might also want to take that spammer comment off of your blog. He sent me the same thing. I keep reporting him, fengy something or other.

  11. No, no cure! I really love the seed packet design and the way you so artistically set them off on the checker plaid cloth. Your lilies look luscious :)

  12. Some lovely seed choices there. Good luck with the seed sowing. My fingers are itching to start but I will wait a couple of weeks longer ! I enjoy Sara Raven's books too.

  13. Of course there's no cure! It's all part of the obsession and seed packets are the least of our expenses, so why not have lots and lots?

How bad do I have it? I just bought a beautiful box just for holding the beautiful seed packets. LOL
