Don't Mow the Meadow!


So it's July 5th 2013, and I reckon, courtesy of a cool and cloudy spring, that the meadow is a good two weeks behind where it was this time last year.  I can live with that. If it extends the length of season deeper into the Autumn, well,  bravo.

Poppies are the star of the show right now, along with a lot of ammi majus, the bishop's flower. As ever, it's the umbellifers that attract the most insects.


I have a small query however. I have to admit I'm not sure what the pastel blue flower below is. I can tell you there's lots of it and very beautiful it is too. It has the fluff and powder blue of an ageratum, but that's as far as I know. Any ideas?

    Lovely!

    Look up trachelium varieties and see if that's your blue/purple wildflower.

    Stay cool in the heat.

    We need a prolonged period of hot weather. This spring was so cool and wet, then June wasn't exactly the best, so sunshine and heat is welcome. I think I'll light the BBQ this weekend!

      I've been thinking about this all day! I love a good mystery. Looking at it again, I think it is Phacelia tanacetifolia (Lacy Phacelia).

    Beautiful and it's got me trying to remember the ditty, Off to mow a meadow but that's all I can remember and the tune.

      Hi VW. This is a repeat of last years meadow on a slightly larger scale. It's grown taller this year, I guess because we've had a lot of rain. Yes it is a pleasure to walk through.

    It's looking brilliant Rob. Glad that somebody could id that fabulous blue flower. Not so far away from you at the moment and have seen a fair few poppies blooming their socks off as we have been on the road :)

    Today the ammi majus has taken over, I think it looks better than last year, it'll gradually turn gold as we head into August.
